In BG1 (the original, not the enhanced edition) you would only be able to get to level level 7 (or 8 for bards, thieves, and druids). It is much better that they create a satisfying narrative with a reasonable challenge then either delay the game hugely to add in more than double the content (pace of levelling slows down as levels increase, so even though getting from 12 to 20 is 8 levels, it takes at least as long as getting to 12) or let players become so overleveled that there is no challenge.īesides, gotta leave room for DLC/a sequel.

The answer is a lot. BG:EE has a median play time to complete the main story of 30 hours (main + extras has a median of 50 hours, and a completion time of 85 and a half hours) and BG2:EE has median times of 47.5h, 76.5h, and 135h for main story, main + extras, and completion respectively. Keep in mind these games were a different ruleset (a modified version of 2nd edition), but it took 2 base games and 3 official expansions to get to the level cap. And in BG2 EE (or original with expansions) you capped out at 8 million xp which was level 31 for druids, mages, sorcerers, and shamen level 34 for rangers and paladins and level 40 for the rest. In the expansion (i.e., Tales of the Sword Coast) and the enhanced edition (which includes the expansion) the experience cap lets you get to level 8 (9 for mage, sorcceror and shaman or 10 for druid, bard, and thief). why are they capping it at such a low level do we know? Some people expect at least the next spell rank around 11 for rank 6 or lvl13 for rank7.
